Something Worth SharingA Better Question When we face potential challenges and impact - and uncertainty - we often consider what possibly lies ahead as either good or bad. I know personally that I can get caught imagining scenarios that may play out, and then pop them into one of two categories: 1) is it good? or 2) is it bad? Life isn’t like this, though. I’ve recently had a personal health ‘unknown’ hanging over my head with one of the possible outcomes being extremely unpleasant and frightening. When asking myself if this would be good or bad, the answer was simply ‘as bad as it could get’. After several days of imagining the worse-case possible, I realised that I had been asking myself the wrong question. Things can perhaps look and feel scary, but when we change the question from ‘will it be good or bad?’ to ‘what can be gained from this situation?’ it helps to reframe how we look at things. This change in thinking in turn changes our emotions and allows us to better prepare and regain a sense of control. I still don’t know which outcome I’m facing yet, but I now do know that regardless I have looked at options for what can be gained. Even in the most dire situations imaginable, there are always things we can gain.
